Cottonwood Heights City is seeking a highly qualified and motivated Deputy Director of Public Works to join our leadership team! This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced engineering professional who is passionate about public service, infrastructure development, and making a meaningful impact in the community.

Working under the direction of the Public Works Director, the Deputy Director also serves as the Assistant City Engineer and plays a key role in overseeing the City's public works operations, infrastructure projects, budgets, and personnel.

What You'll Do

As the Deputy Director of Public Works, you will help lead the department's daily operations and long-term initiatives. Key responsibilities include:

• Department Leadership: Assist in planning, organizing, and overseeing public works operations, including streets, utilities, parks, facilities, and fleet services.
• Infrastructure & Capital Projects: Help direct the planning, design, construction, and completion of infrastructure improvements and capital projects.
• Team Development: Supervise, mentor, train, and evaluate assigned personnel while promoting a positive and productive work environment.
• Budget & Resource Management: Assist in developing and administering departmental budgets, monitoring expenditures, and overseeing purchasing activities.
• Project & Contract Oversight: Manage assigned construction and maintenance projects, coordinate with contractors, and ensure compliance with contract requirements.
• Collaboration & Community Engagement: Work closely with City departments, elected officials, community stakeholders, and the public to support City initiatives and address infrastructure needs.
• Emergency Preparedness & Response: Assist in coordinating departmental responses to emergencies and incidents affecting public infrastructure.
• Executive Leadership: Represent the Public Works Director as needed, including serving as Acting Director in their absence.

What We're Looking For

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• Five (5) years of experience in the construction, maintenance, or repair of public works systems.
• Five (5) years of progressive supervisory experience.
• Current registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) in the State of Utah.
• Valid Utah driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Strong understanding of public works operations, engineering principles, construction practices, and governmental budgeting.
• Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage complex projects, and develop effective solutions.
• Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with employees, elected officials, contractors, and the public.
• Strong organizational skills, sound judgment, and the ability to balance competing priorities.
