The Biomedical Equipment Technician III is a senior technical professional responsible for the advanced troubleshooting, maintenance, repair, calibration, inspection, and support of complex and high-risk medical equipment across Beth Israel Lahey Health. The BMET III serves as a subject matter expert within assigned technology domains and applies advanced technical knowledge to resolve non-routine equipment issues, support patient care, and improve equipment reliability and performance.

The BMET III provides technical guidance and mentoring to less experienced technicians, leads technical components of equipment implementations and operational initiatives, and collaborates with Clinical Engineering, vendors, clinical departments, and other stakeholders to support effective lifecycle management of healthcare technology. While serving as a senior technical resource, the role remains primarily an individual contributor position.

Job Description:

Essential Duties & Responsibilities including but not limited to:

1. Independently diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, calibrate, and resolve complex, non-routine, and high-risk medical equipment issues using advanced technical knowledge, test equipment, manufacturer resources, and sound judgment.
2. Perform and validate preventive maintenance, inspections, repairs, calibrations, safety testing, and other service activities on complex medical equipment in accordance with manufacturer recommendations, departmental standards, and regulatory requirements.
3. Serve as a technical resource and escalation point for Biomedical Equipment Technicians, providing troubleshooting assistance, technical guidance, mentoring, and knowledge sharing.
4. Lead technical work associated with equipment installations, upgrades, conversions, relocations, technology implementations, and other healthcare technology initiatives in collaboration with Clinical Engineering, vendors, and clinical stakeholders.
5. Analyze recurring equipment failures, service trends, and reliability concerns and recommend maintenance strategies, process improvements, training needs, equipment replacement considerations, and other corrective actions.
6. Develop, enhance, and promote technical procedures, troubleshooting guides, service documentation, testing protocols, checklists, and standard work practices within assigned areas of expertise.
7. Coordinate with manufacturers, vendors, and external service providers to address advanced technical issues, support complex repairs, and facilitate effective documentation, communication, and knowledge transfer.
8. Provide technical support for quality, regulatory, recall, incident-investigation, root-cause analysis, risk-management, and patient-safety activities requiring advanced subject matter expertise.
9. Maintain accurate and complete service records within the CMMS and support equipment inventory management, documentation quality, service-history analysis, and data-driven decision-making.
10. Provide technical education and training to Biomedical Services personnel and clinical users and support competency development related to assigned technologies and equipment platforms.
11. Participate in on-call, after-hours, and emergency-response activities and provide advanced technical support during significant equipment failures, operational disruptions, and critical service events.
12. Maintain and expand technical knowledge through continuing education, manufacturer training, professional certifications, and development of expertise in assigned technologies.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Associate degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology, Electronics Technology, Military Biomedical Equipment Training, Engineering Technology, a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education, technical training, and progressively responsible Healthcare Technology Management experience.

Licensure, Certification & Registration: None required. CBET or other relevant technical certification preferred as applicable to level.

Experience: Five or more years of progressively responsible biomedical equipment service experience, including demonstrated independent support of complex medical equipment and advanced troubleshooting responsibilities.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities: Advanced knowledge of biomedical equipment maintenance, electronics, electro-mechanical systems, test equipment, clinical equipment safety, service documentation, medical terminology/physiology, and technical problem solving. Ability to lead technical workstreams, mentor others, and communicate effectively across clinical, vendor, and technical teams.

Preferred Qualifications & Skills:

Dept./Unit-Specific Skills: Senior generalist Biomedical Services support, advanced troubleshooting, complex/high-risk equipment, implementation leadership, technical mentoring, and escalation.

Pay Range:

$45.00 - $60.75

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
