Harborview Medical Center's Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery team has an outstanding opportunity for a ARNP, Nurse Practitioner; or PA-C, Physician Assistant.

WORK SCHEDULE

Full-time, 100% FTE (40 hours per week)
Day shift, Monday – Friday

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

• Inpatient, Outpatient, ED, and OR responsibilities
• Provide continuity of care for patients throughout their reconstructive needs: Craniomaxillofacial and Gender-Affirming Care, though, will be cross-trained to support other specialties across the Plastic Surgery Department (i.e. Lower Extremity Trauma, Trunk and Pelvic Reconstruction).
• Diverse patient population, including pediatrics
• Independent management and decision-making with supportive and collaborative surgical providers.
• Wound evaluation, debridement, and management
• Independent procedures commensurate with skill level and training: anesthesia assisted wound care and arch bar removal, laceration repair, in-clinic scar revisions, incision and drainage, aspirations

DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The University of Washington Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery is dedicated to advancing excellence in patient care, education, research, and innovation. Our faculty provide comprehensive reconstructive surgical care for patients across the Pacific Northwest, offering expertise in microsurgery, craniofacial surgery, burn reconstruction, gender-affirming surgery, and complex wound management.

The department also maintains a strong commitment to clinical and translational research, advancing surgical techniques, improving patient outcomes, and expanding access to reconstructive care through scientific discovery, education, and community engagement.

PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

The APP supports continuity across the continuum of surgical care—from initial evaluation and preoperative preparation through hospitalization, discharge, postoperative follow-up, and long-term recovery. Care is patient-centered, trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and affirming to each patient’s identity, goals, and lived experience.

• Outpatient Clinic: Conduct new patient consultations, pre-operative evaluations, and postoperative follow-up visits; manage wound care, suture/staple removal, and surgical site assessments; in-office procedures commensurate with skill level and training; coordinate multidisciplinary care plans with surgeons
• Inpatient Care: Hold the Plastic Surgery team pager, round on primary and consult patients, manage acute surgical issues, write orders and progress notes, coordinate discharge planning, and serve as a primary point of contact for nursing staff, consulting services, and collaborate with residents. Assess new consults throughout the hospital: ED, OR, acute care, and outpatient clinics. Independently performing ED procedures "commensurate with skill level and training"
• Would add seeing ED consults, possibly performing ED procedures "commensurate with skill level and training"
• Operating Room: Serve as first assistant for craniofacial reconstruction, gender-affirming surgical procedures (e.g., facial feminization/masculinization, chest and genital reconstruction), free flap and microsurgical cases, and general reconstructive procedures; assist with positioning, exposure, closure, and intraoperative decision-making.
• Documentation & Coordination: Maintain accurate, timely documentation across EMR systems; assist with in-basket messaging with patients, secure chat messaging with providers, and care coordination for medically complex patients.
• Patient Education & Advocacy: Provide compassionate, culturally competent and trauma informed counseling to patients and families navigating complex reconstructive or gender-affirming care pathways.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

• Master’s or doctoral degree from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
• Current Washington State ARNP licensure and prescriptive authority by the start of employment.
• Current national board certification appropriate to the assigned patient population and clinical setting.
• Current DEA registration/eligibility required for the position.

OR

• Graduation from an ARC-PA–accredited Physician Assistant program.
• Current Washington State Physician Assistant licensure by the start of employment.
• Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
• Current DEA registration/eligibility required for the position.

AND

• Eligibility for UW Medicine credentialing and clinical privileges.
• Current BLS and ACLS certification; additional life-support certification as required by the assigned clinical setting.
• Ability to work effectively with medically and socially complex patients and within an interprofessional academic practice.
• Demonstrated commitment to respectful, equitable, inclusive, and patient-centered care.
• Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.
