Purpose:

Lead and coordinate the day-to-day operations of the designated work area while providing guidance, support, and direction to staff. Serve as a key resource for operational and financial processes, ensuring compliance with UPMC guidelines and standards. Monitor workflows, analyze performance metrics, support revenue cycle activities, and escalate issues to leadership as needed to promote efficient operations and exceptional patient experiences.

Responsibilities:

• Serve as the on-site operational lead, acting as a resource, advocate, and problem solver for staff, patients, and providers.
• Monitor patient flow and adapt staffing and operational workflows to meet changing patient volumes and service demands.
• Review and manage revenue cycle and billing reports, taking appropriate action to support accurate and timely reimbursement.
• Ensure insurance authorizations and precertification requirements are completed prior to treatment.
• Collaborate with clinical staff and ancillary departments to resolve reimbursement, authorization, and billing concerns.
• Identify referral needs and coordinate with participating healthcare facilities when appropriate.
• Train, mentor, and onboard new team members while providing ongoing education and support to staff.
• Communicate departmental updates, staffing concerns, and operational recommendations to leadership.
• Maintain accurate patient demographic and insurance information, verifying eligibility and benefits through electronic systems and direct carrier communication.
• Support continuous process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, patient satisfaction, and overall operational performance.

High school diploma or GED and at least 3 years of experience in a related fiscal/admissions/registration function -OR- Associate degree and 1 year experience -OR- an equivalent combination of education and experience required. Medical terminology, third party health care coverage experience and strong understanding of managed care regulations are required. Strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills and be able to remain professional and courteous when dealing with sensitive issues and stressful circumstances. Ability to effectively problem solve and make independent decisions. Prior working experience on personal computers and various office equipment. Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately with all ages of patients. Possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interprets the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs. Provide the care needs as described in the department's policy and procedure. Previous experience with EPIC highly preferred.
