Background:

Volvo Penta is strengthening its Strategic Workforce Planning capabilities to ensure the right competencies are available for future business needs. As AI creates new opportunities for workforce insights and scenario planning, the company wants to explore how AI-enabled Workforce Intelligence can help identify future skills requirements, competence gaps and workforce risks, enabling more proactive and data-driven workforce decisions.

Thesis work objective:

Investigate how AI can strengthen Strategic Workforce Planning and competence planning at Volvo Penta, with external benchmarking of large global industrial companies. The study should translate business scenarios into a skills-based workforce view and recommend how People & Culture can move from static headcount planning to continuous, data-driven decision support.

Expected output

• Develop an AI-based model to identify future capability needs and competency gaps.
• Build an AI agent capable of analyzing roles, competencies, workforce capacity, and future business requirements.
• Create a prototype for scenario analysis, enabling different future scenarios to be simulated and evaluated.
• Evaluate how Generative AI can be used as a decision-support tool within Strategic Workforce Planning.

Your Qualifications and Personal Profile:

We are looking for a student who combines analytical curiosity with an interest in people, business transformation and responsible AI. You should:

• Study Industrial Engineering, Data Science, AI, Business Analytics, HR/Organization or a related field
• Be comfortable with qualitative and quantitative analysis
• Communicate professionally in English
• Be able to work full or part time from Volvo Penta in Gothenburg

Meriting:

• Understanding workforce analytics, scenario modelling, skills data.
• Interest in responsible AI, change management and future of work
