About this opportunity:

A key innovation in 6G is Integrated Sensing and Communication (ISAC): the same radio infrastructure used to carry data also senses the physical environment. By analyzing reflected signals, the network can estimate range, velocity, and angle of objects – enabling blockage prediction, presence detection, and activity recognition. But a network that senses its environment also senses the people in it, often without their awareness or consent. Compared to the mature research on ISAC waveforms, the privacy and security dimension is underexplored, making it a timely, high-impact topic as ISAC moves toward standardization.

What you will do:

The goal is to characterize what an ISAC network can infer about people and its environment, model the associated threats, and design sensing that preserves privacy while staying useful. The following steps are envisioned:

• Build a sensing-inference taxonomy mapping signal features (range/Doppler/angle) to what they reveal (presence, count, motion, activity).
• Develop a structured threat model (e.g. STRIDE / LINDDUN) covering adversaries, attack vectors, assets, and privacy vs security impact.
• Design and evaluate privacy-preserving mechanisms (resolution limiting, consent signaling, data minimization, differential-privacy-style perturbation).
• Quantify the privacy-vs-utility tradeoff and conclude with a design framework and a presentation for the Ericsson team.

The skills you bring:

• Master’s students in electrical engineering, computer science, security, or related field.
• Programming experience in Python for simulation and data analysis.
• Familiarity with security and privacy concepts (threat modeling; differential privacy is a plus).
• Strong teamwork; suitable for two students with a split focus:
• One leaning toward sensing/signal.
• One leaning toward security/privacy.
