Newmont's Merian operation is an open-pit gold mine located approximately 66 kilometers south of Moengo in the tropical rainforest of north-eastern Suriname. Construction began in 2014, with commercial production commencing in 2016. The operation includes five open pits and processes ore using a conventional mill and Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) circuit. Newmont owns a 75% interest in Merian, with the remaining 25% held by Suriname’s state-owned oil company. Operating on a rotational work schedule, Merian brings together a diverse workforce of Surinamese and international professionals in a modern camp environment.

Your contribution

As Manager Exploration, Merian, you will provide technical oversight, leadership, and management of exploration programs to deliver exploration strategy, resource growth objectives, and business commitments. You will lead multidisciplinary teams, manage exploration portfolios, and collaborate across functions to ensure safe, responsible, and value-driven exploration activities.

As part of our team, you will

• Lead the identification, assessment, and advancement of new exploration opportunities aligned with long-term business strategy.
• Develop and deliver annual exploration plans, budgets, reserves/resources, and multi-year exploration programs.
• Manage the safe execution of exploration activities while achieving schedule, budget, and performance objectives.
• Monitor program performance against established KPIs and communicate results to stakeholders.
• Partner with technical, operational, environmental, land, permitting, and community teams to deliver responsible exploration programs.
• Coordinate efforts between project managers, technical specialists, and business partners to overcome execution challenges.
• Promote collaboration across regions, sites, and functions to leverage expertise and best practices.
• Govern exploration systems, technical standards, SOPs, and methodologies to support safe and productive operations.
• Lead continuous improvement initiatives by integrating new technologies, methodologies, and regulatory requirements.
• Build, develop, coach, and lead a high-performing exploration team while fostering an inclusive and collaborative culture.

Prerequisites for your success in this role

• Bachelor's degree in Geological Sciences or a related discipline.
• Significant experience leading exploration programs, portfolios, and teams within the mining industry.
• Experience with near-mine and generative exploration across diverse geographic environments.
• Strong knowledge of exploration planning, execution, budgeting, safety practices, and regulatory compliance.
• Advanced data analysis and interpretation capabilities. Experience presenting technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Working knowledge of data visualization and resource modeling tools such as Power BI, Tableau, and related geological software.
• Proven leadership, communication, stakeholder management, and team development skills.
• Professional registration (such as P.Geo) or eligibility for immediate registration is preferred.
• Additional language capabilities in French, Spanish, or Dutch are considered an asset.

Your work environment

You will work closely with exploration leaders, technical specialists, operational stakeholders, business partners, consultants, contractors, regulatory agencies, and local communities. The location for this role will be at Merian site in Suriname. This position requires frequent travel to exploration and mining operations and a strong commitment to health and safety, sustainability, environmental stewardship, and responsible resource development.
