Job Description

Reporting to the Emergency Program Manager, The General Surgeon will be responsible for providing surgical care and support to the general management at Kuajok State Hospital, organizing and conducting training to clinical staff, and ensuring coordination with the Hospital Management on administrative and logistical operations that affect patient care, as well as coordinating with any other relevant stakeholders.

The General Surgeon will also support the Emergency Programme Manager and the Head of Programs in developing periodic reports and any other assigned tasks.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

Program implementation, development and monitoring

• Carry out elective and emergency (minor and major) surgical operations based on needs and availability of supplies.
• Assist in the supervision of the clinical care in the hospital.
• Conduct regular referral clinics, screening and booking patients for elective surgeries in close collaboration with the anaesthetist and hospital patron/matron.
• Lead daily ward rounds in the Inpatient Ward, including monitoring and follow up of all inpatients’ treatment and recovery (including issuing of discharge orders).
• In collaboration with Hospital Director, organize and implement trainings and refresher trainings for the local health staff, based on identified training needs and according to the established work plan.
• Provide continuous capacity building, monitoring and supervision of hospital staff to ensure quality of care in management of patients and delivery of care according to MOH guidelines, especially through continuing medical education (CME).
• Responsible for the treatment and care of Amref staff in the project area.
• Champion community engagement events (such as radio talk shows) to promote positive behavioural change in utilisation of health services.

Program coordination

• Assist in coordinating across the different components of the project to ensure effective integration of health services at both primary and secondary levels (such as emergency referrals from and to other facilities, admissions, and treatment) and logistics necessary for the provision of surgical services.
• Participate in hospital management meetings with Hospital Director and other relevant partners and authorities.
• Advise the Emergency Program Manager on the required essential medicines, medical consumables and equipment necessary to uninterrupted provision of quality surgical care.
• When called upon by the Emergency Program Manager, represent Amref in coordination meetings, assessments, and other events that promote Amref program.
• Accurate and timely collection and presentation of program results.
• Periodically report to the Program Manager on activity performance, main challenges and lessons learnt and ensure all activities are carried out according to the work plan.
• Provide monthly data on the theatre performances, according to the standard reporting template in use.
• Document and share human interest stories that showcase the impact of quality health services with the aim of promoting behavioural change that increases community uptake of services and improves health outcomes.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

• Postgraduate Certification or Completion of Specialty Training in General Surgery or its equivalent postgraduate certification of not less than 3 years from a recognized University or higher institution of learning.
• At least 2 years of work experience as General Surgeon in a similar high-volume hospital.
