Global Banking and Markets

Global Banking and Markets (GBM) conducts the Bank’s wholesale banking and capital markets business with corporate, government and institutional investor clients. GBM is a full-service wholesale bank and investment dealer in Canada and Mexico and offers a range of products and services in the U.S., Latin America and in select markets in Europe and Asia-Pacific.

More specifically, GBM provides clients with: corporate lending; transaction banking (including payments, trade finance and cash management); investment banking (including corporate finance and mergers & acquisitions); fixed income and equity underwriting, sales, trading and research; prime services (prime brokerage and stock lending); foreign exchange sales and trading; commodity derivatives; and collateral management.

Purpose

Contributes to the overall success of the Global Wholesale Operations (GWO) risk and control strategy through driving and implementation of enterprise policies, standards, methodology and control initiatives for proactive operational risk management. The GWO Business Risk Management (BRM) function forms part of Global Banking & Markets (GBM) BRM, with a core focus of continuously strengthening risk culture and internal controls by reviewing and enhancing operating procedures and practices. GWO is an essential part of the GBM infrastructure that enables business partners to meet their strategic objectives by designing and executing operational processes that compliment business needs, manage risk, and comply with regulatory obligations throughout the client and trade lifecycles.

Accountabilities

• Supports the Operational Risk and Control framework for GWO, providing support for various GWO utilities through:
• Reviewing the Reporting of Operational Risk Events (OREs) to support complete, accurate and timely reporting and escalation. Contribute to lessons learned, root cause reviews and targeted deep dives using established risk tools and methodologies.
• Planning and Execution of Risk and Control Self Assessments (RCSAs)
• Monitor and track audit, regulatory, RCSA and operational risk issues and actions; assess the adequacy of management action plans and support closure evidence against stated requirements and due dates.
• Prepare reporting for various management forums, committees, or ad hoc requests as they arise
• Advises GWO utilities on operational risk related matters to ensure adherence to the Bank’s Operational Risk Management framework.
• Support standardization and synchronization of risk reporting and risk profiles.
• Support risk awareness activities and training related to event and issue standards, root cause analysis, risk write-ups and escalation expectations.
• Build collaborative relationships with Compliance, Audit, Technology and other partner teams.
• Champions a customer focused culture to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems and knowledge.
• Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions. Actively pursues effective and efficient operations of his/her respective areas in accordance with Scotiabank’s Values, its Code of Conduct and the Global Sales Principles, while ensuring the adequacy, adherence to and effectiveness of day-to-day business controls to meet obligations with respect to operational, compliance, AML/ATF/sanctions and conduct risk.
• Knowledge of general enterprise risk policies, standards and methodology and how that apply and can be effectively operationalized in GWO.
• Support the execution of initiatives with internal GWO stakeholders to mitigate risks through assessment of control design and operating effectiveness with minimal guidance from line manager.
• Understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions. Provides support to the business unit in the areas of risk and policy, to help the business unit achieve their goals in alignment with the Bank’s strategy.
• Support builds out of key control library for conformance and control testing across utilities/regions.

Education / Experience

• Proficient in using Microsoft Office suite, including Excel and PowerPoint skills with strong experience in developing executive level presentations
• Knowledge and experience with Sharepoint, PowerBI or other reporting and analytics tools preferred.
• Ability to apply a sound knowledge of general operational risk management practices and principals.
• A good understanding of back office functions / services provided by Global Wholesale Operations in support of the Bank’s capital markets and wholesale banking business.
• At least 3 years’ experience in a related control function within Operations, Operational Risk, Finance or Internal Audit.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills, must be able to effectively communicate concepts and requirements to key stakeholders.
• Ability to prioritise and deal with multiple competing priorities
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively and diplomatically in a team environment with peers and superiors across organizational lines.

Work Arrangement:

This position is an onsite role, with the expectation that you will work 4 days a week in the office. Please note that this is subject to change based on the needs of the business.
