Job Summary

The Division of Legislative Services is hiring a Resolutions Writer and Program Coordinator. This is a full-time, salaried position with state benefits. The ideal candidate is a strong, efficient writer who can draft clear, accurate, and appropriate commending and memorial resolutions under tight deadlines; has excellent research skills and an eye for detail; and can manage a high volume of requests during the General Assembly's regular and special sessions. This position will also provide organizational and logistical support to legislative commissions between sessions. This is a partially remote position with limited in-office requirements.

Essential Functions

• Draft commending and memorial resolutions (typically one to two pages) for the House of Delegates and Senate at the request of individual members of the General Assembly, following the agency's established format and drafting conventions.
• Research the individuals, organizations, events, or achievements being honored or memorialized to ensure resolutions are accurate, complete, and appropriately worded.
• Communicate with legislative patrons and their staff to gather information, clarify requests, and confirm details before finalizing resolutions.
• Manage a high volume of resolution requests and meet fast turnaround times, particularly ahead of and during regular sessions of the General Assembly (typically January through March) and during special sessions, which may occur other times of the year on short notice.
• Provide staff support for one to two interim legislative commissions, including scheduling meetings and presenters, preparing agendas and meeting materials, and attending meetings.
• Conduct legal and legislative research in support of resolution drafting and commission work.
• Perform additional tasks as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities

• Strong, concise writing skills and mastery of correct English mechanics, grammar, and syntax.
• Ability to research individuals, organizations, and historical events quickly and accurately, often under time pressure.
• Meticulous attention to detail, particularly with names, titles, dates, and factual accuracy.
• Ability to work extended and weekend hours as needed during sessions of the General Assembly.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the professionalism and discretion needed to work directly with legislators, legislative staff, and commission members.
• Ability to manage a high volume of requests while meeting deadlines.
• Ability to work diligently, both independently and collaboratively, to anticipate and solve problems.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
• A positive, enthusiastic attitude and customer service orientation.

Education and Experience

A degree in English, Journalism, Communications, Political Science, Writing, or another relevant field. Minimum of one year of relevant experience (can include freelance, legislative, or government experience). Experience in a deadline-driven writing/editorial environment preferred.

Pay Range

$50,000-55,000 based on experience
