About the Position

The Commercial Lines Underwriter is responsible for developing, managing, marketing, underwriting, and sustaining profitable commercial insurance business throughout the Northeast territory. This role will work closely with independent and retail insurance agents and brokerages to identify quality business opportunities, develop strong market relationships, negotiate placements, and deliver creative insurance solutions across commercial lines.

The ideal candidate brings strong technical underwriting expertise, a commercial insurance background, established carrier relationships, and the ability to balance underwriting discipline with a strong sales and relationship-management mindset.

Key Responsibilities

• Build and maintain strong, trusted relationships with independent insurance agencies and brokerages throughout the Northeast.
• Develop new business opportunities through proactive agency outreach, relationship development, and underwriting pre-qualification.
• Evaluate and underwrite commercial insurance submissions while identifying acceptable and profitable business opportunities.
• Market and negotiate new and renewal business with insurance carriers and specialty markets.
• Demonstrate strong knowledge of commercial insurance coverages, underwriting guidelines, forms, and risk characteristics across both standard and excess & surplus lines markets.
• Develop and maintain productive relationships with carrier partners and markets.
• Coordinate internal and external resources to achieve account objectives and provide exceptional service.
• Assume ownership of account activity, ensuring all underwriting, marketing, and servicing requirements are completed accurately and efficiently.
• Meet and sustain targeted revenue and profitability goals.
• Educate and collaborate with colleagues, sharing technical expertise and contributing to a high-performing team environment.
• Serve as a knowledgeable resource to agency partners by providing underwriting guidance, coverage expertise, and market insight.
• Travel throughout the Northeast territory to meet with agency partners, carrier representatives, and other industry contacts.
• Maintain compliance with applicable insurance regulations, workplace laws, and company policies.

Qualifications & Experience

• 5–7+ years of relevant commercial insurance underwriting or brokerage experience.
• Active Property & Casualty insurance license required.
• Substantial experience within a commercial insurance brokerage, wholesale brokerage, or underwriting environment.
• Strong understanding of commercial insurance coverages and relevant forms.
• Knowledge of both admitted/standard and non-admitted/E&S markets.
• Established working relationships with insurance carriers and specialty markets.
• Strong underwriting judgment and ability to identify profitable business opportunities.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to manage multiple accounts and priorities.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent insurance experience and industry knowledge will be considered.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to travel approximately 35% throughout the Northeast.

Compensation

Disclosure required under applicable state or municipality regulations: The expected salary range for this position is $70,000 - $110,000 annually and will be impacted by factors such as the successful candidate’s skills, experience and working location, as well as the specific position’s business line, scope and level.
