As we continue to grow our UK Place & Movement team, we're looking for an experienced Senior Highways Engineer (Urban Realm) to help deliver innovative, people-focused transport and public realm projects across the UK.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a collaborative multidisciplinary team working on a diverse portfolio of urban realm, active travel, highway improvement and sustainable transport schemes for both public and private sector clients.

You'll play a key role in leading the design and delivery of projects, mentoring junior engineers and helping shape the future growth of our Urban Realm capability.

THE ROLE

As a Senior Highways Engineer, you will be responsible for managing and delivering urban realm and highway design projects from concept through to construction. You will work closely with clients, stakeholders and internal multidisciplinary teams to develop high-quality solutions that improve connectivity, accessibility and placemaking outcomes.

Key responsibilities include:

• Leading the design and delivery of urban realm, highways and traffic engineering projects.
• Developing designs from feasibility and concept stage through to detailed design and construction support.
• Acting as a technical lead and design checker on projects.
• Coordinating multidisciplinary teams including structures, drainage, lighting and landscape specialists.
• Managing project budgets, programmes and resource allocation.
• Building and maintaining strong client relationships.
• Mentoring and supporting the development of junior engineers and technicians.
• Providing technical input into proposals, bids and business development activities.
• Undertaking site visits, surveys and construction support activities where required.
• Ensuring compliance with relevant standards, specifications and quality assurance procedures.

WHAT YOU'LL BRING

We're looking for an experienced engineer with a passion for delivering high-quality urban environments and transport infrastructure.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

• Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
• Typically 5+ years' experience in highways, urban realm or traffic engineering design.
• Experience delivering projects across one or more of the following:
• Public realm schemes
• Active travel infrastructure
• Bus priority and public transport improvements
• Junction design
• Section 278 works
• Road safety schemes
• 20mph zones and traffic calming measures
• Parking and streetscape schemes
• Utility coordination and diversions
• Highway drainage design
• Strong understanding of UK highway design standards and guidance.
• Experience managing projects, programmes and budgets.
• Ability to lead multidisciplinary design teams.
• Experience reviewing and checking technical designs and drawings.
• Knowledge of highway construction methods, materials and specifications.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD and associated design software.
• Strong report writing, communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Ability to work effectively with clients, contractors and project teams.
• Commitment to quality, safety and continuous improvement.

DESIRABLE

• Working towards or already holding Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status.
• Experience working on projects for local authorities, Transport for London or National Highways.
• Experience using Civil 3D and/or OpenRoads.
• Site supervision or construction support experience.
• Postgraduate qualification in a transport or highways-related subject.
• Experience contributing to tenders, bids and work-winning activities.
