Domain lead architect - cloud

Based in Melbrourne, our Domain Lead Architect – Cloud, you’ll provide strategic and technical leadership across the Cloud domain, working with Cloud and Infrastructure Engineering and teams across Optus Networks to align network design, technology strategy, operations, risk management and governance. You’ll guide the evolution of robust, secure and scalable cloud network solutions across mainly private and some public cloud environments, while leading architecture decisions that support business objectives, new product development and the future technology roadmap.

This is a high-impact role for a collaborative technical leader who can translate complex architecture into practical outcomes, influence stakeholders at all levels and help shape the next generation of Optus network capabilities.

What You'll Do

• Contribute to the development and execution of long-term Cloud domain network strategies aligned with Optus’s business goals, technology roadmap and growth plans.
• Provide architectural guidance across multiple platforms and services, including the design, implementation and maintenance of scalable, reliable and high-performing network infrastructure.
• Lead platform owners and engineering teams through major projects and deployments, providing technical direction, knowledge transfer and support to achieve successful delivery.
• Participate in Networks Architecture Review Boards and other technical forums, reviewing high-level designs and driving actions through to final approval.
• Provide technical input into security workshops and strategies, supporting the implementation of security protocols, firewalls and other measures that protect cloud network environments from cyber threats.
• Partner with vendors, technology teams and business stakeholders to evaluate new technologies, develop capabilities, troubleshoot complex network issues and deliver continuous improvement.

What makes you perfect for the role?

• 10+ years’ professional engineering experience in telecommunications, including at least 7 years working with Cloud technologies, platforms and protocols.
• Comprehensive knowledge of mobile data networks, telecommunications networking and carrier environments, with experience across fixed, mobile and data network requirements.
• Strong technical expertise across OpenStack, containerised and virtualised Cloud, orchestration, microservices, NFV, Kubernetes, Docker, IaaS, PaaS and SaaS environments.
• Proven experience in network architecture, design and implementation, with knowledge of 4G and 5G networks, IP routing protocols such as OSPF and BGP, TCP/IP, tunnelling, NAT, access lists and network QoS.
• Strategic thinking and cross-functional leadership skills, with a track record of transforming strategy into practical solutions, driving change and building effective partnerships across multiple teams.
• Exceptional problem-solving, communication and stakeholder-management skills, supported by a technical qualification in IT, Telecommunications Engineering or a related discipline. Postgraduate qualifications and experience in security, commercial management or contracting are desirable.
