Founded in 1916 and headquartered in Butte, Montana, NorthWestern Energy has delivered reliable, affordable electricity and natural gas to customers in Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Yellowstone National Park for more than a century. The company traces its roots to Montana Power Co. and South Dakota-based Northwestern Public Service Co., taking its present form in 2002 after acquiring Montana Power's electric and natural gas transmission and distribution system and becoming a partial owner of Colstrip Unit 4. Today, NorthWestern Energy serves 734,800 residential and business customer accounts through 28,310 miles of electric transmission and distribution lines and 9,483 miles of natural gas lines, supported by more than 1,000 employees. Its generation portfolio includes 11 hydroelectric dams, the Dave Gates Generating Station, and the Spion Kop and Two Dot wind farms in Montana, along with ownership stakes in Big Stone, Coyote I, and Neal Unit 4, plus the Aberdeen Peaker Plant and Beethoven Wind in South Dakota. As a growing, financially sound, investor-owned utility, NorthWestern Energy trades on the Nasdaq under the symbol NWE.
